The Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IAP CAS) is a public research institution. The main scientific focus of the institute is the research of processes in the Earth's atmosphere and near space. The research of the Department of Ionosphere and Aeronomy (DIA) concerns mainly the following points: forcing of the ionosphere by atmospheric waves from below (internal gravity waves, infrasound, planetary waves); forcing of the ionosphere by Space weather from above (geomagnetic storms and substorms, solar flares,solar terminator); irregularities in the ionosphere (traveling ionospheric disturbances,sporadic E layer, spread F); validation and improvement of ionospheric models; investigation of ionospheric drifts.In addition to basic research, the Departmen's staff participates in the design and development of scientific instruments and methods or in monitoring and special observations of the Earth's atmosphere. The obtained scientific data are further shared across the scientific community in the framework of rich international cooperation.
